ST. TAMMANYPARISH, La. -- A Carriere, Miss. man died in a fiery motor vehicle crash on Interstate-59 in St. Tammany Parish, after the man rear-ended an 18-wheeler that was disabled on the side of the road, according to State Police.

The 18-wheeler rolled over a mattress in the right lane of the highway, State Police said, with the mattress struck the undercarriage of the truck, tearing the airlines, fuel lines, and electrical lines from under the vehicle.

State Police said the 18-wheeler was stalled in the right lane of I-59 with the lights disabled when Thomas Neumann, 47, slammed into the truck in his pick-up. Neumann was killed after his pick-up truck caught fire and became engulfed in flames. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

Northbound lanes of I-59 were completely closed Sunday night while crews tried to clear the deadly crash. The crash happened in the Pearl River area at around 9:15 p.m.
