NEW ORLEANS A civil district court judge has ruled that the city's traffic camera program violates the city charter and that tickets issued after her ruling Friday morning are null and void.
Judge Paulette Irons issued a preliminary injunction against the program Friday morning.
The ruling stemmed from a lawsuit on behalf of several plaintiffs who had received tickets from the cameras.
Attorney Ed Washington successfully argued that the program violates the city charter by placing the camera program under the Department of Public Works instead of the police department. He argued that the city charter allows only the police department to have authority over traffic violations.
The city's traffic cameras cite violators who run red lights and some also ticket those who exceed the speed limit.
