NEARSLIDELL, La. - Fire heavily destroyed a St. Tammany Parish fire station Saturday morning, with firefighters finding themselves in theunusual position of beingdispatched to a blaze at their own station.
The fire at Station 14near the Crossgates subdivision of Slidell, left the 3,500-square foot building,more than 50 percent damaged.
Saturday's fire was first discovered by a firefighter who heard a loud popping noise near the engine room.He discovered one-third of the engine room on fire, according to a news release from St. Tammany Fire Protection District 1.
The firefighter notified dispatch operators that more manpower was needed to fight the fire. The engine assigned to the station was in the area picking up some supplies, according to fire officials.
When it returned to the station, the building was already heavily engulfed in flames.It took some 20 minutes for the 20 firefighters to put the fire under control. They say it appeared to have been an electrical fire.
No injuries were reported.
Firefighters will be relocated to a nearby fire station until the damage can be repaired, officials said.
