America's national debt increases by $3 billion every day and there seems to be no end in sight. That's the topic of this week's Commentary by Eyewitness News Political Analyst and Gambit columnist Clancy DuBos.

NEW ORLEANS -- Yesterday I spent some time with former Congressman Jim McCrery of Shreveport. McCrery is a Republican, but right now he's working on a nonpartisan effort called 'The Campaign to Fix the Debt.'
Fix the Debt does not support either political party's solution to the debt crisis. Instead, it wants both parties to drop the rhetoric and start working together.
If we don't fix the debt soon, Americans won't have to worry about terrorist attacks. We'll kill America ourselves by drowning it in debt.
We have to make deficit reduction a national priority. That means reducing the projected debt by reforming entitlement programs as well as the tax code. Everybody has to 'own' this problem.
Fixing the debt requires extraordinary courage in Congress. That won't happen unless the rest of us turn up the heat. A good way to do that is by going to the campaign's web site, fixthedebt.org.
Log in. Sign the petition. Write letters. The next time one of them calls a town hall meeting, show up and demand that they work with the other party and don't accept the usual partisan rhetoric and excuses. Congress will only give us what we demand. It's time to demand that Congress do its job and fix the debt.
