SLIDELL, La. - A Florida man in town for X-Factor auditions was arrested after police said he stole a vehicle left unattended at a gas station and then led officers on a high-speed chase.
The incident occurred Monday night around 8:15 p.m.
According to police, 20-year-old Orrion Wilson was at a Slidell-area gas station with his suitcase from the trip to New Orleans when he noticed a customer leave his vehicle running as he went into the store.
Police said Wilson used the opportunity to jump into the car and drive off.
The victim called Slidell Police who soon swarmed the area and located the car, driven by Wilson, on Fremaux Avenue. Police said Wilson ignored attempts to stop the car and led police on a high-speed chase through the city that eventually reached in excess of 75 miles per hour.
A tactical maneuver by police caused Wilson to end the chase at a grassy area on I-10 near Fremaux Avenue. Police said Wilson attempted to flee on foot but was quickly apprehended by police.
Police said Wilson admitted to stealing the car, saying he had done well in X-Factor auditions and was asked back to perform again in New York. He said he was trying to get home first.
Wilson was charged with: Aggravated Assault on a Police Officer, Theft of a Motor Vehicle, Theft Over $500, Criminal Damage, Resisting an Officer, and Aggravated Flight from an Officer. Wilson is currently at the Slidell City Jail and is awaiting transfer to the St. Tammany Parish Jail where a bond will be set.
