HOUMA, La. A 52-year-old Houma man admitted to shooting and killing his older brother early today and has been charged with second-degree murder, authorities said.

William Fitzgerald Loring, of 5569 W. Park Ave., woke about 1 a.m. to 57-year-old Ricky Loring beating on his front door, wanting to fight, Terrebonne sheriff's Maj. Malcolm Wolfe said.

William said he and Ricky, of 302 Madewood Drive, had smoked crack cocaine together about 7 p.m. Saturday, Wolfe said. William said Ricky got mad when he refused to buy more drugs.

When William opened the door, Ricky rushed in, and William shot him dead with a handgun. William left the scene and went to a relative's home before calling the Sheriff's Office, Wolfe said. William later told police that he shot his brother 'because he felt like Ricky was going to hurt him.'

Ricky was declared dead at the scene about 3:02 a.m.

Both men have prior drug arrests, Wolfe said.

William is being held in the Terrebonne Parish jail without bond.
