The New Orleans Police Department is investigating a hit and run Uptown that left one person dead Wednesday morning.

It happened just before 4:30 a.m. near the intersection of Martin Luther King Boulevard and S. Robertson Street, near Freret Street.

NOPD says a 52-year-old Tab Virgil, of New Orleans, was crossing the street heading home to the apartments on S. Robertson when a car, traveling northbound on Martin Luther King Blvd., hit him and then fled the scene.

There are no witnesses and police are asking residents to look at any surveillance cameras and video systems in the area to see if there is footage of the hit and run and to help them identify the car and driver involved.

NOPD warns there will be traffic closures, throughout the morning, in this area while officers investigate.

The Orleans Parish Coroner will conduct an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. Blood and alcohol test are pending.

The incident remains under investigation.
