NEWORLEANS-- A proposition that would have provided the Audubon Nature Institute with nearly $12 million yearly for decades failed.

Audubon Commission was asking voters to approve a tax -- $11.9 million a year for the Audubon Nature Institute, which runs the zoo, the aquarium, the insectarium, the species survival center and Audubon Park among other facilities -- and that tax would have run for 50 years raising $595 million.

While president and CEO of the Audubon Nature Institute, Ron Forman, insisted voters were being asked to approve a tax renewal that was necessary to keep the Audubon facilities world class, opponents questioned the size and length of the increase, along where the funds the would be spent.
