NEWORLEANS-- A19-year-old man has pleaded guilty to shooting his mother's boyfriend after an argument over crawfish shells.
Arcainia Banks pleaded guilty to second-degree murder Tuesday, days before a jury was to be selected.
According to a statement from the Orleans Parish District Attorney's Office, Banks' mother and the victim, who was the mother's boyfriend, got into an argument. The mother was upset with the victim because she believed he had left crawfish shells behind in their apartment in the 1500 block of Dumaine Street.
Banks' mother then threw her boyfriend out of the apartment, and a security camera caught him going into the apartment to get his things. Moments later, he can be seen crawling out of the apartment after getting shot in the abdomen.
Banks can be seen on the camera following him and shooting him a second time in the back, according to the district attorney's office.
'This was a senseless crime,' said District Attorney Leon Cannizzaro. 'How can an argument over crawfish shells so quickly erupt into gunfire? The members of this community should know that this District Attorney's office has very aggressive prosecutorial policies regarding crimes of violence.'
Banks was 18 when he shot the man and had no prior felony convictions. Banks was sentenced by Judge Franz Ziblich to 14 years in prison.
