SLIDELL -- The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office is investigating a Tuesday morning incident where a routine traffic stop landed two people in jail after an altercation with the deputy.
Around 3 a.m., the black Ford Mustang that Frederick Jackson, 34, of Slidell, was driving was reported stolen in Slidell, according to the sheriff's office. At the traffic stop at the Value Travel Inn on Yaupon Drive, as he was being detained, Jackson started a physical altercation with Sgt. Robert Edwards.
Starlet Overby, 40, of Slidell, the passenger, inside the Mustang, jumped behind the wheel and began to drive off. As she was trying to exit the parking lot, she nearly hit a police cruiser. Deputy Edward Stone smashed the driver's side window, gained control of the Mustang and detained Overby, according to the sheriff's office.
Jackson was caught by deputies after a short chase on foot.
According to the sheriff's office, Overby and Jackson were treated at the hospital for injuries before being booked into the St. Tammany Parish Jail.Deputy Stone suffered minor injuries to his hand. He was treated and released from the hospital.
Overby was arrested on three counts of attempted first-degree murder, two counts of aggravated flight from an officer. Jackson was arrested on two counts of resisting an officer with force, possession of stolen property, improper lane usage and ignoring a traffic signal.
