NEW ORLEANS A temporary restraining order was granted Wednesday against the Le Petit Board of Governors to halt the sale of the theater.

The theater's Board of Governors had a deal in place with Dickie Brennan that would sell 60 percent of Le Petit to the restaurateur, according to a Guild of Le Petit Theatre du Vieux Carre spokesman.

The spokesman said the board cannot move forward with a sale until a hearing on June 24. Jim Walpole, president of the guild, said he met with four of the board members Sunday. He said it has 'become clear' that the sale was going to proceed.

'While we agree that both sides are passionate about the theatre, the Guild feels that the iconic landmark building constructed for Le Petit is as much a part of the institution as the plays it performs,' he said.

Walpole said the guild has two goals: to disallow the 60 percent sale and to open the process, allowing other investment groups to come forward.

The guild is planning a rally to be held Tuesday at the Columns Hotel. For more information, go to
