WESTWEGO, La. - On Wednesday, the Coast Guard began their effort to try to raise a sunken tug boat out of the Mississippi River near Westwego.

First, barges that the tug was pushing will be moved. Then, a crane will be put in place that will eventually be used to salvage the vessel.

The tug boat sank on Friday after it hit something in the river.

It went under with 12,000 gallons of diesel fuel on board.

The tug appeared to be leaking less fuel, according to the Coast Guard.

If the weather cooperates, divers could inspect the wreck as soon as Thursday.
