The Saints cut ties with vested veterans Remi Ayodele (DT) and Luke McCown (QB) on Monday, two of the 15 required cuts by the afternoon.

And neither should be a surprise.

Ayodele's cut says more about what the Saints think of rookie Akiem Hicks than it does the veteran.

The beefy defensive tackle was nearly non-existent during the preseason. So much so, in fact, that it was easy to forget that he was on the team save for his fashion companies' T-shirts his teammates donned.

Hicks is proving to be another mid-round steal for the Saints. He has been active and hard to contain during the preseason. He has shown that he's a quick learner and won't lack the strength to play in the NFL.

And though Tom Johnson has been out for pretty much the entirety of preseason, he obviously has enough upside the Saints are OK with keeping him around.

As for McCown, he never was going to make the team. But he now has quality film to put out for other teams and, should something happen to Drew Brees and Chase Daniel, McCown is out there and knows the offense.

McCown is a vested veteran with no practice squad eligibility left. Sean Canfield is the opposite. He's cheaper and can bounce on and off the roster like the coaches enjoy to do with him.
