PLAQUEMINES, La. -- The bodies of a man and a woman were found inside of a home in the hard-hit town of Braithwaite Thursday evening, according to Parish President Billy Nungesser.

Deputies went out to search for the couple after someone went to a shelter and said that the man and woman had apparently not escaped the flooding that swamped Braithwaite.

Dozens were rescued from their homes after floodwaters swamped the area.

Nungesser said the bodies were to be identified and relatives notified.

He said they are the only two fatalities he knows of at this time.
