GRAY, La. A man who was lying in the middle of a roadway in Gray was killed after a driver was unable to avoid striking him Sunday night, according to Louisiana State Police.

Shortly before 9 p.m., India Walker, 25, was traveling north in a 2006 Chrysler Pacifica on LA 24 in the left lane near Pitt Bridge.

As Walker approached the bridge, she noticed a person lying in the roadway directly ahead of her, police said.

She steered right in an attempt to avoid the pedestrian but was not able to in time, police said.

The man, William Winslow, 43, of Gray, was pronounced dead on the scene by the Terrebonne Parish Coroner's Office.

Walker was wearing a seat belt and was uninjured in the crash, police said.

Walker submitted to a breath test and was cleared of any alcohol involvement. Toxicology tests are pending for Winslow, according to the LSP.

The crash remains under investigation, police said.
