HARVEY, La. A man walking along Destrehan Avenue in search of a dropped pair of eyeglasses was killed when he was struck by an intoxicated driver in a hit and run, according to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office.
Around 10:15 p.m. on Thursday, Alvin James, 46, of Harvey was traveling southbound near the 1400 block of Destrehan Avenue, deputies said.
James' 51-year-old wife and 70-year-old father were passengers in his truck, JPSO said.
When his wife leaned out of the vehicle's window, she dropped her glasses, according to deputies.
James exited the truck and walked down the roadway in an attempt to locate the glasses. As he was searching, a Chevrolet Suburban traveling southbound hit him and continued without stopping, JPSO said.
As deputies were investigating the scene around 10:40 p.m., the SUV driver, Derrick Fradieu, 42, of Marrero returned, according to investigators.
Fradieu admitted that he knew he hit something, but didn't realize it was a person, deputies said.
He was taken into custody and booked with felony hit and run and driving while intoxicated.
