NEW ORLEANS From big hair to big costumes, the Bourbon Street Awards were in full swing despite Mother Nature raining on the parade.
'Neither rain, sleet nor snow could keep us away,' Blanche Debris said. 'We are just like the U.S. Post office ladies and gentleman.'
The 50th annual Bourbon Street Awards are all about the costumes and everyone from the Beatles to the downright 'different' wowed the crowd.
So whether it was a group dressed as 'Happy Hour' or someone dressed as 'Story Time,' the contestants went all out to win over the judges.
One participant said, 'You have to keep the tradition going. Keep the glitz and the glamour and all the hearty fun of it.'
Another said, 'Sometimes you just have to go with it. It is Mardi Gras and there is only one day like this. It is wet and cold and if I have to get wet and cold it and be ready.'
If you're brave enough to venture from the stage, the costuming tradition was alive and well in the French Quarter.
Another reveler said, 'This is my sixth time celebrating the best party in the world. Really, you have the best city and the best party really.'
An umbrella or poncho also was a hit as the rain kept coming.
A rain-soaked Bourbon Street didn't stop the bead tossing and the crowds from celebrating.
A group dressed as Marvel's Avengers said, 'We are going to run (the rain) out of town, it may just take a little time until tonight until that happens.'
