NEW ORLEANS, La. -- Time is running out to file your 2013 tax income returns, as you only have until midnight to get those returns in the mail to the Internal Revenue Service.

Tuesday, April 15 is the last opportunity to have those taxes post marked in order to be in on time, but all hope is not lost if you can't make it to the post office within normal businesses hours.

If you did wait until the last minute, you're not alone, as statistically, about 1/4 of all returns are filed on the very last day of tax season. That's about 140 million Americans who wait until the last minute to file taxes.

A fee of 5%, up to 25%, of taxes owed is charged for those who file after the tax deadline.

An obviously good tip for the season is always, the earlier you can mail it, the better. An April 15 is no exception as the earlier in the day you choose to mail your taxes, the better because as the day goes on, post offices get busier.

On the other hand, if you still need extra time to file a return, there is always the option of asking for an extension.

Most Post Office locations in the New Orleans Metro Area will close at, or very close to 5 p.m. Tuesday however, the main Post Office on Loyola Avenue will have a full retail window in service and available, from 7:30 a.m. until 7:00 p.m., at 701 Loyola Avenue.

One of the most asked question during tax season is what would happen if a person doesn't get to the Post Office by the time if closes on tax day and a simple answer offered by UPSP is that the main post office will offer curbside collection pick-up from 5:00 p.m. until midnight, again at 701 Loyola Avenue.

Also if you miss the deadline today, but you are getting a refund, there is no penalty granted if you file within the 3-year time period.

Statistically, of those people who get returns, about 30% nationally use that money to pay off debts or bills or use it to invest. Less than 10% choose to use the money on a shopping spree or vacation.
