METAIRIE, La. ― Drew Brees and Dan Marino likely will always be tied together when it comes to the football world.

The Saints quarterback nearly broke the Hall of Famer's NFL record for passing yards in a season once before, falling 16 yards short in 2008.

Three seasons later, Brees is knocking on the doorstep of not just breaking it, but shattering it.

The thing is Brees never thought he'd see this moment again.

'We talked about it after the '08 season,' Brees said. 'At the time it was kind of just like, 'OK, we made our run at it and the chances of that happening again are probably really, really slim.' '

Now, with two games to go, Brees sits 305 yards short of breaking Marino's record of 5,084 passing yards in a season.

And once again, Marino wanted to talk with Brees about it.

This time, though, Brees turned the opportunity down.

'He actually reached out to me this week and wanted to do something but I'd really like to just focus on the game,' Brees said. 'I respectfully just kind of said let's wait here and just kind of let everything fall into place the way it is and then we'll definitely sit down. I would love to do that.'
