BELLE ROSE, La. A 15-year-old died after being stabbed with a butcher knife by his schoolmate as they were having a fist fight on Thursday, according to the Assumption Parish Sheriff's Office.
Around 6 p.m., a witness said that she saw the teenagers swinging fists at each other in the middle of Dorseyville Lane, according to deputies. Then, one of the participants backed away, pulled out a knife and stabbed the other in the side. The witness said that she saw the teen pull the knife out of the victim's side and the victim run about 300 feet before collapsing, according to deputies.
The sheriff's office received a 911 call from both a citizen who saw the victim in the street and the suspect's mother, who said she had just gotten off the phone with her son and he told her he had stabbed the victim.
The victim, Eric Myles Jr., was pronounced dead at the hospital, according to deputies.
The suspect was detained by investigators and, upon questioning, they learned that the teens were neighbors and schoolmates at Assumption High School. Myles was a sophomore and the suspect was a freshman.
The teens had developed a strained relationship over the past couple weeks, that included arguing at school and fighting in the neighborhood previous to Thursday's incident, police said.
The kitchen grade butcher knife used in the fight was found at the suspect's home, police said. The suspect was charged with second degree murder and is being held at the St. James Parish Youth Center.
Additional security was set up at Assumption High School on Friday, as well as counselors to deal with students affected by the death.
