NEWORLEANS - Dietary fiber is often touted for it's digestive tract benefits.

But according to a couple of recent studies, most notably the European prospective investigation into cancer and nutrition, people who eat the most percentage of dietary fiber, tend to live longer.

Mackie Shilstone was in the studio with a plate full of high fiber foods and told us its top five health benefits:

  1. May protect against circulatory disease
  2. Control weight gain
  3. Reduce risk of digestive disorder
  4. Lowers the markers in the body that contribute to inflammation
  5. Protective effect for smoking related cancers
