AMITE, La. -- The Tangipahoa Parish School Board will decide Thursday whether to ask voters for a new tax and to rededicate an existing one.
The new tax is a 15-mill property tax for the Hammond area to continue supporting the accelerated and magnet programs there. It would replace a 9-mill tax, in place now, that expires this year, and fill the gap of a grant for magnet programs also expiring.
The rededication request involves a one-cent sales tax for all school maintenance and construction.
The district wants to get permission to use that money for school operations as well, and to change the way it spreads out the spending, as suggested by the judge in the district's desegregation case.
If the school board approved the measures at Thursday night's meeting, they'll go to the state bond commission for a thumbs up, then appear on a May ballot.
