NEWORLEANS- Many women, and even their doctors, are not aware there's something that can make post menopausal women feel like they are young again. It's something that some say can even strengthen marriages.

Debbie Macalusa, 58, of Mount Hermon, Louisiana, has had difficult times. There's the loss of one of her two autistic children, colon cancer, surgery on her degenerating back, and painful fibromyalgia. It's no wonder she thought her lack of energy, fatigue, weakness and loss of sex drive for her husband, was from her poor health and emotional hardship, until she got help from urologist Dr. Neil Baum.

'Thirty-three million American men have erectile dysfunction. Do you know more women had sexual dysfunction than men with erectile dysfunction?' Dr. Baum asked.

Women are told their lost libido is emotional. They need therapy. But that may have nothing to do with it.

'More than 50 percent of women between the ages of 25 and 65, when women are sexually active, are not enjoying sex, are not getting aroused, are not having an orgasm, or have painful intercourse. 'Testosterone in a women can be like magic,' said Dr. Baum.

Many don't realize that, just as studies are now showing women need to replace estrogen and progesterone hormones after their ovaries stop making them at menopause, or after the uterus and ovaries are removed, women's ovaries also make the male hormone testosterone. And when it's gone, side effects such as weight gain, loss of muscle mass, fatigue, loss of energy, depression and sexual dysfunction are the result. A simple blood test, of testosterone and free testosterone levels, lets you know what you need to replace. Safe rub on gels, patches, injections or pellet implants, the size of a grain of rice, can restore what your body is lacking. These let the hormone go directly into the blood stream just as the testosterone from the ovaries did.

'Women come back to me and say that their light switch has been turned on,' said Dr. Baum enthusiastically. 'That they enjoy intimacy more than every before.'

'I feel more like a women,' said Macalusa, who says she and her husband of 14 years now have a healthy sex life.

'It is really a wonder drug for women and it is perfect, safe, used in small amounts,' added Dr. Baum.

Of course, if a woman has too much testosterone, she can get unwanted hair growth, a lower voice and skin break outs like a teen. But when the doctor just replaces what your body is not producing, and monitors your blood levels, it is safe with none of those side effects.
