MARRERO, La. - A 2-year-old boy is fighting for his life after he was shot outside his apartment complex in the 2800 block of Mt. Kennedy Drive in Marrero around 10 p.m. Saturday night.

Multiple bullets pierced walls and shattered glass throughout the Ridgefield Apartments. But the most devastating was the one that struck a 2-year-old boy in the chest.

Neighbors are stunned.

'I just panicked,' said neighbor Naomi Marshall. 'I just sat down and started crying.'

'I prayed cried and everything else. I'm just hoping that he survives,' said neighbor Jonathan Mackyeon.

The little boy and his pregnant mother had just parked and were walking back to their apartment when shots rang out, striking the 2-year-old, according to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office.

The 2-year-old was in critical condition after undergoing surgery at University Hospital, said a JPSO spokesman.

Investigators believe the child and his mother were caught in the crossfire of a gunfight between several people. They don't believe the two were the intended targets.

'Unfortunately that poor innocent child walking through the parking lot with his mother sustained a gun shot wound that could be life threatening,' said Col. John Fortunato, a sheriff's Office spokesman.

On Sunday, detectives scoured the area for evidence. They found multiple shell casings from both a high caliber rifle and semi-automatic handgun.

'It just was a bunch of bullets going through. I just ducked, dodged, and ran to the floor,' said Mackyeon.

One of those bullets ripped through Mackyeon's bedroom wall.

'If I'd have been in there it would have been over with,' he said.

It's not the first shooting at the complex. The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office said the apartments have been the scene of several shootings and murders over the years.

Neighbors like Mackyeon are hoping to move now that a child has become the latest victim.

Jefferson Parish investigators are still working to develop a motive or suspects. If you have any information on this shooting, call Crimestoppers at (504) 822-1111.

You don't have to leave your name and could get a cash reward.
