NEWORLEANS A four-alarm fire damaged an apartment complex in Treme early Saturday, according to the New Orleans Fire Department.

Around 5: 30 a.m., firefighters were called to the 1700 block of Esplanade Avenue to a the three-story, wood-frame apartment complex.

'Two residents heard the smoke detectors and assisted in the evacuation by knocking on doors of residents who escaped. During the evacuation, an explosion occurred causing a wall to pull away from the structure and the building to become unstable,' said a statement from the fire department.

The roof and third floor areas of the building, which had 12 units, eventually collapsed during the fire.

The fire was brought under control by 7:15 a.m.

So far no injuries have been reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
