A Destrehan man whose pickup truck went into Lake Pontchartrain from the Causeway Bridge was rescued thanks in large part to a Good Samaritan who went into the water and several other people who stopped to render aid.

The incident occurred around 3 p.m. on the south bound lanes of the Causeway.

Causeway Police said the 26-year-old pickup driver reached for his cell phone and his pickup went onto the rails for about 80 feet before going into the water.

A man dove in to the water and others on the scene were able to pull both the driver and Good Samaritan up to safety.

'They did save (his life),'said Mike Viola of the Causeway Police. 'The gentleman who went in the water, he's a hero. He helped save the guy's life, but we don't encourage people to do that. We have equipment and we're specially trained to do that.'

The driver was taken to the hospital complaining of back pains.

The Causeway southbound lanes were closed during the rescue and were reopened around 4 p.m.
