NEW ORLEANS Archie Jefferson, the brother of former U.S. Congressman William Jefferson, was arrested by police and booked on several charges, including contracting without a license, according to the Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office database.

Jefferson, 60, was booked on three charges Friday theft, forgery and contracting without license -- and then released on his own recognizance the same day, according to the sheriff's office.

In 2012, Jefferson was the focus of the investigation in the death of his wife, Sandra Jefferson, who died after she suffered severe trauma to her head in their Broadmoor home, according to police. Jefferson was never charged in her death.

Jefferson also has had brushes with the law before, when he was convicted of practicing law without a license and of issuing worthless checks in the 1990s.
