METAIRIE, La. ― Carl Nicks was back working with the first-team offense Wednesday afternoon after a brief one-practice demotion to the second-team unit.

Still, the guard was left in shock following the morning practice.

'I don't really want to get into how they let me know that,' Nicks said. 'I'd rather keep it in.'

Terrence Metcalf, on offseason pickup, worked with the first-team for the Saints' morning practice with the Houston Texans.

'It has to be one of two reasons obviously they feel I'm not good enough anymore or they feel the guy behind me is better,' Nicks said. 'You've got to ask coach about that.'

When queried about the move, Head Coach Sean Payton said only that there are a limited number of snaps and they're trying to get the offensive lineman as much work as they can.

In addition to Nicks, second-round pick Charles Brown was taking snaps with both the first team and second team in place of Jermon Bushrod when he was working with the 1's.

As for Nicks, the move should light a fire under him.

'I'm confident in my abilities,' Nicks said. 'If they feel I'm not capable of playing with the 1's, I've got to respect that.'
