NEWORLEANS - French Market vendors are banding together to speak out against proposed changes by French Market Corporation Executive Director Frank Pizzolato.

About 100 vendors overflowed the corporation's headquarters on North Peters Street to confront Pizzolato and Chairperson Demetric Mercadel.

'What this is is a dictatorship,' yelled Vendor Committee member Allen Hayden.

Several vendors said their main concern is the abolishment of tenure, which determines the location of each vendor.

President of Vendor Subcommittee Justin Winston stated the vendors have tried other ways of establishing locations, such as posting a list, which caused physical fights, and pulling from a hat, which people perceived as unfair.

'Tenure has caused the least trouble, it's understandable. It starts when you get there and ends when you leave,' Winston said.

Mercadel says the board did not get rid of tenure, although they are trying to address the issue of subletting and how to handle tenure for vendors who don't work full time.

She has stressed several times, 'There's going to be gives and takes.'

'At the end of the day this is about a better city and to improve the market,' Mercadel said.
