NEW ORLEANS ― Monty Williams has sent to the NBA film of the foul in the Hornets' game against Detroit that sent forward Jason Smith to the injured list.

Williams believes Pistons center Greg Monroe, a New Orleans native, should be suspended for flagrantly tossing Smith into another player, giving the Hornets' energetic forward a concussion in the process.

Smith will not play in tonight's home game against Sacramento (8-15).

'I believe the NBA needs to look at that play and maybe suspend Monroe because it was a violent play that should have been penalized and the refs didn't catch it,' Williams said. 'I think that's one of the things they have to look at on film because that can't happen. Those kinds of plays can cause fights in the game.'

Smith took two shots to the head in the fourth quarter, eventually leaving the game. He won't return, Williams said, until he passes baseline concussion tests while being evaluated this week.

What's disturbing to Williams is the pattern that has developed in how teams are overpowering the Hornets with what he believes has been malicious intent.

'In our first Dallas game, Jason Terry gets mad because Emeka sets a screen on him and so he goes and grabs Mek by the neck and slams him to the ground and the referee is sitting there watching it,' Williams said. 'I sent that clip in to just show the pattern that our guys are getting crushed and we're losing guys because of it.'

He added, 'To me, that's not basketball. That's MMA or something like that.'
