HAMMOND, La - A 53-year-old bicyclist was hit and killed by a car attempting to pass on the wrong side of the road Sunday night on LA 1064 in Hammond, according to State Police.
A spokesperson said that Van Johnson was riding his bike eastbound in the westbound lane of 1064 around 10 p.m.
Police said 19-year-old Aerell Anderson was driving a 1998 Oldsmobile Achieva and traveling eastbound when he attempted to pass a slower driver and crossed the double yellow center line of the roadway, temporarily traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes when he impacted the rear of Johnson's bike, ejecting Johnson.
Police said Anderson fled the scene. Johnson, who was not wearing a helmet, was pronounced dead on the scene by the Tangipahoa Parish Coroner's Office.
Troopers discovered Anderson's car, abandoned near the crash scene and found him attempting to turn himself in at the Amite Police Department.
He was booked with negligent homicide, hit and run driving, passing in a no passing zone and driving without a license.
