BOGALUSA, La. -- In October, every chair in a building in Bogalusa will be occupied by customer service and administrative representatives for General Dynamics.

The company, an international technology business, signed on to move into the Bogalusa Industrial Park to give its healthcare-related call center a new home.

City and parish officials welcomed the company, and its 600 new jobs for the area, with open arms Tuesday.

'We believe that this opportunity for our citizens is the most important, in terms of numbers of jobs, since the first tree fell to make the Great Southern Lumber Company,' said Bogalusa Mayor Charles Mizell.

'Like I say, I'm almost giddy about this situation,' said Washington Parish President Richard Thomas, 'I couldn't imagine it almost a year ago. It's a wonderful thing.'

In a place where the unemployment rate is more than 11 percent, residents are definitely interested.

'I'm looking to venture out,' said Timothy Edwards, 'Try something new and see where my skills will take me.'

The city is also hoping to draw in students and anyone with a technology background that has recently found themselves unemployed because of other business like this leaving the area.

'We're very excited about General Dynamics coming to Bogalusa and we're hoping we can provide any workforce level education they might need,' said Shelia Singletary with Northshore Technical Community College.

And it's the first of what many hope becomes several great opportunities for Washington Parish.
