HOUMA, La -- A one-month-old baby boy is fighting for his life in a New Orleans-area hospital after the sheriff of Terrebonne Parish said the child's teenage mom shook him wildly and tossed him on the bed.

Tina Simpson, 19, is in jail on a charge of attempted second-degree murder.

Sheriff's Office spokesman Malcolm Wolfe said the child was injured Tuesday morning and 911 wasn't called until Tuesday night. The child is said to be suffering from multiple skull fractures and bleeding on the brain.

He was initially brought to Terrebonne General before being taken to a hospital in New Orleans.

'She admitted to shaking the baby real hard and also to bouncing the baby on the bed,'said Wolfe. '(It was) just out of anger.'

Neighbors were disturbed by the news. 'I'm very shocked and upset because children are a gift from God,'said Christina Medice.

The boy was breathing but unconscious when emergency workers arrived Tuesday night, police said.

Simpson has a hearing set for Thursday.

Wolfe said issues of teenagers having problems dealing with the stresses of parenthood are not new.

'People who don't have the experience and the education to deal with a small, minor child, dealing with an illness or sickness can be agitating to the person who doesn't have patience.'
