SLIDELL, La. - A man shot and killed one of two pit bulls that was attacking a woman and her dog while on a walk Wednesday morning, according to the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office.
A spokesperson said that the incident occurred around 8 a.m. Wednesday on the walking trail near the Belair subdivision in Slidell.
The spokesperson said the victim was walking her dog, a miniature collie, when the other dogs approached and attacked the collie. When the woman attempted to intervene, the dogs turned on her, biting her in the left arm and leg.
A neighbor who heard the woman scream for help, fired a shot from his 9mm pistol, killing one of the dogs and injuring the other, who ran off.
Deputies responding to the scene located the owner, 22-year-old Leonard Harvey of Slidell. He was issued a misdemeanor summons for violating the parish leash law.
The spokesperson said the owner decided to have the injured dog euthanized due to the extent of its injuries and the concern that it may attack again.
The victim was taken to the hospital and her dog was taken to an animal clinic for treatment of its injuries.
