NEW ORLEANS ― Breton National Wildlife Refuge has been closed to the public by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service until further notice.

Breton NWR includes the Chandeleur Islands Chandeleur, Grand Gossier, Curlew, New Harbor Island, North Islands and Free Mason.

The decision comes days after oil first hit the island chain. Subsequent flights indicated that the sheen as well as emulsified oil were surrounding both sides of the southern half of the islands.

The closure is aimed at allowing nesting sea birds to maintain there undisturbed and to also allow cleanup operations continue uninhibited.
