NEW ORLEANS With thousands of visitors in New Orleans for the Bayou Classic this Thanksgiving weekend, police are planning extra patrols and advising drivers of parking restrictions in the French Quarter and downtown areas.
On Friday and Saturday, from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m., vehicular traffic will be restricted in the area bounded by N. Rampart Street and Decatur Street, Dumaine Street and Canal Street, according to a police news release.
In the event of heavy pedestrian and/or vehicular traffic, Canal Street may be partially restricted between N. Claiborne Avenue and the Mississippi River.
Additionally, vehicular traffic will not be allowed to cross Bourbon Street from Canal Street to Dumaine St.
Police advise people traveling downtown or in the French Quarter to carpool, use public transportation or taxis.
From Friday through Sunday, there will be an increased police presence in the French Quarter, Central Business District, Downtown Development District and other areas where large crowds will be gathered, police said.
Police officers will be patrolling on foot, on scooters, on motorcycles and the mounted unit will also patrol during this holiday weekend.
