ST. TAMMANY PARISH, La. A single-vehicle crash one mile outside of the St. Tammany/Tangipahoa Parish line killed a 17-year-old Ponchatoula girl and injured the two teenage passengers in her car on Monday night, according to Louisiana State Police Troop L.
Around 8 p.m., Kristina Barnard was driving her 2003 Ford Focus westbound on Interstate-12 when it began to drift off road to the left. Her overcorrection caused the vehicle to rotate clockwise and cross both westbound lanes, before running into the tree line on the northside of the interstate, police said.
Barnard was pronounced dead at the scene after a fatal impact with a large tree on the driver's side door, according to the St. Tammany Parish Coroner's Office.
Sasha Stell, 18, and a 16-year-old, both from Ponchatoula, were transported to the hospital with moderate injuries, police said.
All three teens were wearing seatbelts and alcohol/drug impairment is not suspected to be a factor, according to police.
Over the past four days, troopers have investigated three fatality crashes resulting in four deaths where driver inattention played a factor in the crash, police said.
