SLIDELL, La. - Slidell officials recognized the potential action of a religious organization to hold a protest in conjunction with the funeral services for a local Marine who died in Afghanistan.

Services for U.S. Marine Sgt. Michael Guillory will be held at the Slidell Municipal Auditorium on Friday from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. and on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

'There is a possibility of a demonstration of protest by a 'religious organization' (which we have chosen not to mention by name so as to avoid providing that organization any publicity.) While we are saddened that this organization chooses to exercise its First Amendment Rights at such a tragic time for the Guillory family, the organization is protected by the Constitution when doing so. Please note that while we cannot stop this organization from holding its demonstration, we can surround the Guillory family and friends with our love and support,' according to a statement from Mayor Freddy Drennan's office.

Drennan and Slidell Police Chief Randy Smith asked citizens to not engage in any way with any demonstrators, so that 'Sgt. Guillory's funeral is a peaceful and respectful opportunity to honor him for the ultimate sacrifice in his service to our country.'
