NEW ORLEANS -- The New Orleans inspector general issued a report that reveals the Orleans Parish Coroner's Office has illegally spent taxpayer funding.

According to the findings, the coroner has made supplemental payments of $200 to $2,000 to employees and contractors -- usually doctors -- without proper documentation and without legal authority to make such payments.

The inspector general says the coroner also failed to report to the income to the Internal Revenue Service.

The inspector general says the coroner has agreed to make a series or corrections and commended the coroner for requesting the review.
