NEWORLEANS - Monday is Tax Day - the last day to file federal income taxes with the IRS.

The agency said 97 million American taxpayers had submitted their tax forms by the first of this April. About 90 percent were done electronically.

Anyone that owes taxes but is not ready to file will have to pay at least 90 percent of the amount due when applying for an extension. Otherwise, late fees will pile up until the full payment is in.

New Orleans postal workers prepared for last minute filers.

The main post office on Loyola Avenue will offer curbside collection pick-up from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m. The New Orleans branch is the only office in the immediate area with curbside collection hours.

Normal full retail window service is available from 7:30 a.m. until 7 p.m.

All other post offices will be open during regular business hours.

Tips to get tax returns done properly and on time:

  1. File electronically - it's quicker and greatly reduces error.
  2. If paper filing, know the right address to send forms to when finished.
  3. Check the math and any empty boxes and include any extra forms the return requires.
  4. If expecting a direct deposit refund, turn in the correct account information.

Tips on how to make sure the return gets where it needs to be:

  1. Make sure the proper amount of postage is on the return.
  2. Make sure handwriting is clear.
  3. Try to avoid the rush by getting returns in local collection boxes with a pick-up time that hasn't passed.
