BATONROUGE, La. -- A Geismar man has come forward as the local $1 million winner of the Powerball. Jerry Cockerham missed taking a share of the $448 million jackpot by one number, according to Louisiana Lottery officials.
Cockerham bought his winning ticket as he stopped at the Pit Stop Petroleum #1 in LaPlace on what he said is a usual stop for him for a coffee and some lottery tickets.
Cockerham said he wasn't aware he had won until he and his wife saw a news report about it.
'I think they're looking for you Jerry,' Cockerham recalled his wife saying.
Cockerham then checked his Quick Pick ticket and saw that all the number matched - except for the Powerball.
He received $700,000 after federal and state taxes were withheld. With the prize money, Owens said, 'We're going to make it grow.'
The store will receive a bonus of $10,000, which is 1 percent of the prize, for selling the winning ticket.
