NEWORLEANS- Many people thank veterans for their service, but this weekend you have a chance to show your appreciation.
A fundraiser will be held on Saturday to raise money to revive the last remaining VFW Post in Uptown New Orleans.
'This is a Honda Odyssey. It fits three comfortably in the back,' said Marine Corps veteran Kendric Perkins. The devoted coach, who like many others, spends his free time shuttling youth from one sports practice to another. Some might consider it a grind, but not Perkins. The Afghanistan and Iraq war veteran takes nothing for granted.
'The members here they just care about the well-being of each other. There are a number of programs that they introduced me to,' said Perkins. The Uptown VFW helped him get the new mini-van when his truck died.
The veterans group does a lot for local vets like offering job counseling, pro-bono legal services and help with filing VA claims. It's assistance the veterans need and deserve with membership now booming to150 people.
However, with more veterans comes more demand. Services that post-member Marshall Hevron is determined to provide.
'This really is a humble corner of New Orleans, but for us, the things that go on between these four walls. They're really important,' said Hevron.
On Saturday, the VFW is holding a fundraiser in hopes of collecting $10,000 to fund the programs and renovate the VFW building to possibly include an apartment for a wounded veteran.
Hevron says the need is there, the joy is being able to meet it.
'We definitely need to look out for the people that served,' said Hevron.
The fundraiser will be this Saturday, August 24th from 7:00 to10:00 pm at 'F and M's' Uptown.
