MANCHAC, La. -- Southeastern students headed out into the marshes of Pass Manchac today for an environmental experiment.
The group piled dozens of donated, used Christmas trees onto a boat to bring to the Jones Island area in Lake Maurepas, in hopes of filling in an old logging ditch.
Experts say the ditches are avenues for salt water, which lead to erosion.
The group hopes the trees can pick up natural sediments to fill in those ditches.
'If we could figure out a way to close those back in, at a very effective and not too expensive cost, by using used Christmas trees, then I think we found a good way to help heal the landscape at least from the logging ditch standpoint,' said Rob Moreau, Director of the Turtle Cove Environmental Research Station.
Organizers say it could take two to three years to tell if the experiment works.
