ST. TAMMANYPARISH, La. -- A St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office deputy who transported inmates to work details was fired after questionable items were found in his work vehicle. The items found, while not illegal, are contraband and prohibited in jail.

Tyson Sonnier was placed on administrative leave after the items were found in a vehicle assigned to him. He was later fired after an investigation by St. Tammany Jail officials, according to the sheriff's office.

On July 18, detectives searched the vehicle. 'During the search, multiple cell phones and containers of tobacco were found in a carry-bag inside the vehicle,' said a statement from the sheriff's office.

Investigators looked into whether the items had been taken into the jail, said the sheriff's office. As a result of the inquiries, jail administration made the decision to terminate Sonnier.

Officials have not said whether they will pursue charges against Sonnier.
