NEW ORLEANS -- The superintendent of Catholic schools has announced Cathedral Academy will close effective with the 2013-2014 school year.

'We know that this decision may cause some angst among parents and students, but we are doing all in our power to make this an easy and smooth transition for everyone,' said Dr. Jan Lancaster, superintendent of Catholic Schools.

St. Stephen Catholic School, located Uptown, has agreed to accept any student from Cathedral Academy. The Archdiocese of New Orleans says parents may choose to send their child to any Catholic school.

'Change is difficult but it is our goal to create a strong family of Catholic schools in our area,' Lancaster said. 'We want to work with families to help them make the best decisions for their children.'

Cathedral Academy will be the only Catholic school to be shuttered in the archdiocese this year.
