NEW ORLEANS -- Police are investigating a domestic dispute that resulted in a 5-year-old boy being shot Sunday night in New Orleans East.

The shooting happened before 8 p.m. in the 4700 block of Sherwood.

NOPD spokeswoman Officer Hilal Williams said the 5-year-old was shot in the leg. The child's wounds are non-life threatening.

Williams said the boy's father was intoxicated when he got into an argument with his wife. Williams said he then began firing his weapon at her, and the bullet traveled through the wall and into an adjoining room where the boy was shot.

Police haven't released any information on a suspect or a motive.

The father is in custody and is facing an attempted murder charge.

If you know anything that can help investigators, call Crimestoppers at 822-1111.
