NEW ORLEANS, La. -- The City Council will begin hearings on Mayor Mitch Landrieu's 2014 proposed budget plan Wednesday, a discussion that is expected to include a recent deal to implement sweeping reforms at the Orleans Parish Prison. (See 2014 proposed budget)

The two budget plan hearings will take place at 10 a.m. on Wednesday and then again on Friday in which councilmembers will have the opportunity to discuss the mayor's 2014 budget proposal.

Mayor Landrieu's plans include increases for the New Orleans Police Department and the Inspector General's Office, but do not currently include any additional funding for the Orleans Parish Prison Consent Decree.

However, Sheriff Marlin Gusman reached a deal with the city on Monday to secure $1.9 million for the Orleans Parish Prison, at least through the end of this year.

Wednesday, the City Council will likely discuss if and how that funding could be worked into next year's budget.
