Melissa Runnels, 25, of 1797 West Main St. in Schriever, had a loaded gun, several rounds of ammunition and suspected marijuana in her pockets as she banged on the doors of a Raceland fast food restaurant, spokesman Brennan Matherne said. When employees called the sheriff's office about 11 p.m. complaining, Runnels allegedly told deputies her boyfriend had left her at the restaurant after a fight, and that she needed a lift.Deputies agreed to take her back, but first patted her down before letting her into the patrol car, Matherne said. When they found the gun and suspected drugs in her pockets, she began to hyperventilate and was taken to the hospital.Medical staff prevented her from swallowing the drugs, Matherne said.Runnels was later released and booked with possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and illegal carrying of a weapon in the presence of a controlled dangerous substance at the Lafourche Parish jail, he said. She is being held on a $57,000 bond.Runnels has 16 prior arrests, including as drug possession, battery, resisting and escape, Matherne said.
