Attorneys for landowners throughout Louisiana say so-called 'legacy lawsuits' are forcing the oil industry to clean up decades of contamination after state regulators turned a blind eye.

The industry says the lawsuits are frivolous money grabs, used by greedy plaintiffs to dig into the deep pockets of Big Oil.

In their multi-part series called Tainted Legacy, investigative reporters David Hammer and Mike Perlstein expose how more than 360 of these court cases have led to only 12 state-approved clean-ups, exploring the legal, political and environmental fallout of this messy and expensive problem.
