NOPD officers kill man during exchange of gunfire

Another man killed in violent New Year's Day morning

NEW ORLEANS, La. - Police officers shot and killed a man after he began shooting at them near the intersection of North Claiborne and Governor Nicholls early Thursday morning, according to NOPD spokesperson Jonette Williams.

The incident occurred around 3 a.m.

Williams said that officers approached a 22-year-old man in his vehicle and that when he saw the officers, he began firing at them.

Williams said the officers fired back in an effort to protect themselves and others nearby.

The suspect was hit and died on the scene.

Williams said that when officers located the suspect's weapon, they discovered it was a semi-automatic handgun with an extended magazine. She said the suspect also had two additional fully-loaded magazines in his possession.

The officers involved in the shooting will be placed on administrative reassignment pending a review by the Public Integrity Bureau.

Another killing

Police officers responded to a call of a shooting and found a young man lying on the ground with several gunshot wounds to his body.

The incident occurred around 3 a.m. in the 2800 block of Clouet Street, according to NOPD spokesperson Jonette Williams.

The victim, who has yet to be named, was pronounced dead on the scene.
